Taika Dress, Named Clothing

My dear sewing friends,

such a long time I haven’t written any post about my makes. 

Every year, I would sew a new summer dress although my wardrobe is showing quite a lot of them. 

As soon as I had seen Marja’s Taika dress she had sewn as a tester for Named Clothing, I bought the dress pattern thinking of the same Atelier Brunette viscose crepe that Barbara later used for the pattern, have a look at her thorough post with beautiful pictures! However, I changed my mind using this flower print.

I’ve always admired Lauren’s tasteful work and couldn’t resist buying #beehappyfabric for sewing a dress.

ByHandLondon had their 10 years anniversary, too, and were celebrated by Janene @ooobop and Suzy @sewing_in_spain with the IG-challenge #BHL10years. With a post of my old Elisalex dress, I was lucky winning a 50£ price @pigeonwishes! I loved browsing all the lovely buttons and found the perfect buttons for my fabric.

I made a toile some time ago because I suspected some fitting issues with the gathering. I cut the front bodice in size 36, back bodice and sleeves in 38, skirt in 40 (toile in hip length) which went together smoothly.

I decided in shortening the bodice in upper bust height by 0,5cm because I am only 1,62cm tall.

When cutting my fabric, I cut the pieces mostly in single layers because I didn’t want the flowers being doubled and I love the result.

Seam allowances are 1cm, I topstitched nearly all the seams fixing the overlocked seam allowances for easier garment maintenance.

When sewing the skirt pieces, I realised that I had forgotten to correct the back skirt pattern pieces which I had cut out in a wrong size height 1” too short. I decided shortening the skirt front pieces by the same amount. The print being so busy, it isn’t too obvious that the waist is shortened.

Some sewists remarked that the buttonbands were gaping between the buttons, so I shortened the button hole distance from 8cm to 6cm and sewed 12 buttons.

Hopefully, I will be able to wear the maxi dress on some sunny autumn days despite the summery print.

Checked Sierra Jumpsuit and Rise Turtleneck Papercut Patterns

My dear sewing friends,

spring is coming and I haven't posted any new me-made garment this year. So good that today, German speaking sewists are meeting at Me-Made-Mittwoch for showing our worn self made garments.

As soon as the new Geo Collection by Papercut Patterns arrived, I bought the Sierra Jumpsuit PDF pattern, printed it out and taped it together (wich I loath!). I bought some of the patterns in print, too, but couldn't wait for the jumpsuit.

I had sewn the Flint Pants by Megan Nielsen which didn't suit me at all. I loved the lovely charcoal-blue checked woolen suiting I had used so much and decided to refashion it for this jumpsuit.

I had to piece the fabric together and used the fabric on cross grain for the bodice. I cut size S graded to a M at hip level. I used a Burgundy stretch lining from my stash. Then the cut out project was waiting for a long time for me to continue. Does this happen to you too?

Luckily I was careful when cutting out and so I observed that bodice piece A has to be laid in mode inverse on the fabric, otherwise I would have had two right fronts and no left one. This doesn't matter when lining with self fabric but you do not want to have the lining on the outside!

I was courageous sewing the wide legged version while nearly all of the versions I have seen are the tapered one. 

I didn't use the back facing piece because I lined the whole jumpsuit using the pattern pieces and I shortened the lining legs by some centimeters. 

When I had sewn the jumpsuit, I puzzled about the low crotch and nearly shortened the straps to take it up.  However, when you sit down or crouch down, you need this length for the movement!

The left strap tends a little to fall down. Maybe I should have used size XS at bust level.

I was afraid how to use this garment when being at the bathroom. It is surprisingly easy. I love wearing my Sierra jumpsuit even when it's not the most flattering shape.

Kobe dress and Mito slip dress, Papercut Patterns

when Papercut Patterns released their Sakura collection ("cherry blossom") last year, I was so delighted by the lovely style that I wanted to make all of the patterns.

The Kobe dress is a loose straight cut dress featuring an interesting pleat and cut out detail at the back. I sewed it at our annual south German sewing bee at Würzburg last fall. I used a slightly transparent silk crepe of my stash.

Although I would always grade between three sizes, here I cut a straight size XS. I had read that it falls rather large.

I made no changes at all and didn't shorten it. I made French seams and bound the neckline with self fabric bias binding by hand. I didn't make a button hole but sewed the button shut at the back. I made a simple belt, too.

The back is cut out up to the bra back band. Because of my transparent fabric, I was likely obliged to make the slip dress, too. The Mito dress has to be bought additionally.

I used a dens dark chocolate brown silk crepe of very good quality. I changed the construction slightly and seamed the bodice lining by hand including the bodice's and skirt's seam allowances.

I made these pictures freezing outside. The slip's silk is clinging at me. Maybe this will be better without tights?

I can't wait wearing this outfit all day at warmer temperatures.

In 2017, Clo initiated a sew along to make a capsule wardrobe. Each month one would sew a garment of one of the categories thus achieving a capsule wardrobe. 

I realized that I had a garment of most of the categories already on my sewing wish list and made a plan in January 2017:

While I finished one garment of each category, I changed my mind some times choosing another pattern.

Veste-Driftless Cardigan, Grainline

I wore this cozy and easy to wear cardigan quite a lot. It fills a gap in my wardrobe.

Haut jersey- Kanerva Peplum Blouse, Named

I used a very soft French Terry by Atelier Brunette and it is such a pleasure wearing it.

Robe-Farrow Dress, Grainline

I dyed the white viskose fabric and was not so sure about the color. Did you see Pantone's color of 2018? After a recent wear I decided shortening it about five centimeters. Maybe that will do the trick. I am in doubt with the dress as is.

Haut chaine et trame- The Azaire, Gather

I love the Nani Iro double gauze Komorebi "sunshine filtering through foliage" and I love the blouse.

Blouse- Gathered Blouse, „She Wears The Pants“

This is the perfect blouse pattern for floating fabric! I love this blouse, too!

Maillot de danse (au lieu de maillot de bain)- Kimono leotard, Jalie 2673

Why didn't I sew my leotards before? I was never complimented more. All the others would ask where I got this. It fits and it covers my curves decently.

Lingerie- Asaka kimono, Named

Another loved and most worn garment. In summer, I wore it every morning when making breakfast. I used a most lovely Liberty silk and the pattern is really chic and useful.

Pantalon- Tyyni Cigarette Trousers, Named

I am not sure about the trousers. There are quite some wrinkles in the back. I have worn it twice.

Robe d’été (au lieu de shorts)- Adrift Dress, Papercut Patterns

Another garment I am not sure about. Is this a lovely summer dress or just an expensive nightie? When finishing it, the weather turned cold so I don't know right now.

Jupe- Pulmu, Named

although I like the skirt, I didn't dress it. It has a lovely shape and is lined, but after seeing the picture, I feared that it is clinging. I have to give it a try!

Manteau- Sapporo Coat, Papercut Patterns

I wore this coat only once because it is quite thin and it was too cold. I is a great pattern. Some others have made a closure like a zip to make it more warming. To work, I get into the car and out of the car with little time to walk outside so I didn't make any closure. I think it is more chic without.

Finally, my #designindecember. (I won a pattern by SBCC and I will make the peplum Moto Chic jacket. Since I had seen Heather Lou's I had it on my list.) The dress is very lovely to wear and to wash! Just wash it and hang it up, it will be ready without any press! I dressed it not only at Christmas Eve but also at New Year's Eve.

Normally, I would sew what is just coming to my mind. The different categories forced me to begin some garments I wouldn't have sewn otherwise so I am very happy with the result. 

Presenting the makes was a little bit difficult. I would have liked an easy linked in seeing what everyone else had made. Clo even has some great prizes to win, four big packages of sewing patterns.

Lieblingsteil 2017

maybe you have read my previous retrospect post of my makes 2017. Today is our first meeting of German sewists at MMM, themed "favorite make of 2017".

One beloved dress I had forgotten to mention: my Lilli-Malvarosa dress. The fabric is super soft with a lovely drape and it is wearable from fall to spring. I had already made two summer versions of this great pattern by Pauline Alice which I adore.

I had forgotten today's meeting but actually I am wearing the Lilli-dress quite now.

Today's host Claudia of bunte kleider  is showing her top pattern Eliana which is by Pauline Alice, too. She has sewn several lovely versions. Thank you so much all of you organizing our meetings at MeMadeMittwoch!

Malvarosa Dress Lily

Hello, dear sewist fellows,

have a look at my newest dress!

When buying the fabric for the knit top of my #jecoudsmagarderobecapsule2017, I couldn't resist putting my finger on the buy-button of this lovely fabric, Lili of Atelier Brunette which I had put my eyes on since quite a time.

It is a soft modal with a lot of drape, just perfect for a try of the Malvarosa Dress pattern Version B with three quarter length sleeves.

I had cut out the fabric some time ago and had made a little stitch sampling. A totally crumpled stitchline.

I cleaned my machine, oiled it, used other thread and changed the needle without any better stitches.

Can you believe that I had never changed my thread tension since two years ago when I received the sewing machine after a routine service? It was much too high. Eventually, I put it down from 2,5 to 1 and now it sews like a dream. This surely was the reason for creasing topstitching of my lingerie sewing, too.

I made new neckline facings which include the armhole seams to better fix it. The fabric is so soft you can see the fabric imprint (and that of my selfstitched lingerie). The skirt hem is falling down at the cute little pockets but that is ok with me.

I used my shortened bodice pattern pieces from my summery Downton Abby Dress and my Watercolour Dress. Maybe it is a smidgen too short now?

alterations: shortened the bodice (by 7cm?)lengthened the skirt by 7cm,
                  two back darts, new neckline facings.

This is a lovely to wear dress. The fabric is very soft and drapey, the pattern is very comfortable. There is enough room round the shoulders, the loose fitting waist not so flattering but so easy to wear. I love it.
