Vivienne Westwood Sew Along 1: Inspiration

Hallo, Vivienne-Westwood-Begeisterte,

Hello, fans of Vivienne Westwood,

Seit ich vor Jahren eine Dokumentation über Vivienne Westwood gesehen hatte, bewunderte ich ihre Leidenschaft bei der Arbeit und die Energie, mit der sie ihre oft verrückt erscheinenden Ideen umsetzt. Ich fand so beeindruckend, dass sie in ihrem Leben ihre Kreativität so ungehindert ausleben kann und damit auch noch ihren Lebensunterhalt verdient. Alles ist möglich!

Some years ago, I watched a documentary about Vivienne Westwood and was very impressed of her abundance of passion, of the way she lives her creativity, implements her ideas making a living at the same time.

12.09. Start bei Sybille: wir tasten uns an die Grande Dame heran, haben erste Ideen und schäumen vor         

Energie und Kreativität nur so über.

Es haben sich schon mehrere interessante Frauen zum Ideenaustausch bei Sybille eingefunden. Sybille hat sehr viele Informationen übersichtlich zusammengetragen. Nach dem Lesen der Beiträge musste ich einfach anfangen, mir auch ein Vivienne-Westwood-Inspirations-Pinterestboard anzulegen, obwohl ich weder Hobbypunk, Sicherheitsnadelfetischist, Motto-T-Shirt-Träger noch Sex Pistols-Hörer bin. Ein Nerd bin ich wahrscheinlich auch nicht. Mit der Umwelt gehe ich allerdings möglichst sorgsam um und ich denke auch manchmal nach. Kariert trage ich sehr gerne, England mag ich (Liberty's!! ;) ) und Tee trinke ich täglich. Über Geschmack lässt sich streiten.

Several interesting women have assembled to exchange ideas at Sybille's. Sybille has collected a lot of interesting information. After reading their posts, I just had to make up a Vivienne-Westwood Pinterest board, too, although I am neither a hobby punk, fetishist of safety pins, wearer of motto-T-shirts nor am I a listener of the sex pistols. I guess, that I am not a nerd, but I try to be careful concerning the environment and I am thinking and reflecting sometimes. I love to wear checks, I like England (Liberty's!! ;) ) and am drinking tea. There is no accounting for taste. (All of these points beeing suppositions for the sewalong.)

Was mir an Vivienne Westwoods Mode gefällt, ist der Teil Verrücktheit. Die liegt mir sehr, wenn auch in Dosierung einer Prise. Ein paar meiner Kleidungsstücke zähle ich für mich zu dieser Kategorie. Es braucht etwas Mut, sie zu tragen, da sie eher unkonventionell sind.

I love the crazyness of Vivienne Westwood's fashion. I like to integrate a dash of it in my wardrobe. Some of my garments are falling in this category. It needs a little courage to wear them.

Die taillenbetonten, drapierten Schnitte Vivienne Westwoods kann ich mir für mich gut vorstellen. Die androgyne Linie ist dagegen leider nichts für meine Körperproportionen.

I can see me wearing Vivienne Westwood's draped patterns enhancing the waist. However, the unisex silhouette is not made for my proportions.

Mein Ziel ist keine Kostümierung, sondern tragbare Kleidung. Am schönsten fände ich einen wunderbaren weichen Blazer oder eine Jacke. Auch einen karierten Rock fände ich ganz toll, müsste mir dann aber über entsprechende Oberteile Gedanken machen. Außerdem könnte ich mir Überlegungen über ein Hochzeitsgastkleid für nächstes Frühjahr machen.

My objective is not a costume but wearable garments. I would love to have a wonderful, cozy blazer or jacket. A checked skirt would be great, too, but would need coniderations about matching shirts. In addition, I could reflect about a weddingguest dress needed next spring.

Leider nähe ich nicht schnell und verfüge auch nicht über ein Stofflager toller günstiger Stoffe, daher bleibt völlig offen, ob letztendlich ein genähtes Kleidungsstück für mich herauskommt. Wir werden sehen!

It is a shame I am not sewing rapidely and I don't have a stash of wonderful, cheap fabrics. So I don't know wether this sew along will conclude with a wearable garment for myself.

DNS Dessous-Näh-Sucht (Lingerie-Sewing-Addiction) BH-Sewalong 2015-3:Nähen.

Hello, lingerie sewists,

heute ist schon der dritte Termin der DNS (Dessous-Näh-Sucht)- Selbsthilfegruppe, die von Julia von eben Julia angeführt wird. Heute ist das BH-Nähen unser Thema. Julia zeigt sehr schön, wie das Laminatcup genäht wird.

today is the third time the support group of LSA (lingerie sewing addiction) is meeting with Julia at eben Julia. Today's topic is sewing the bra. Julia describes very clearly how to sew laminated cups.

Bei Yoshimi habe ich gelernt, dass man Schnittteile mit kleinen Aufklebern markieren kann. Das mache ich seither vor allem bei den Ärmeln (vorne/hinten, re/li usw.). Auch für diesen BH habe ich mir die Nahtzeichen vorher auf die Aufkleber geschrieben und dann sofort auf die linke Stoffseite geklebt. Das finde ich ziemlich hilfreich. Man muss aber aufpassen: meine halten nicht allzu fest und lösen sich leicht.

Yoshimi showed us how to stick little stickers at your cut-out pieces to better identify them.  That is really helpful. I inscribe them before cutting. You have to be careful, though: Mine don't stick well at the lingerie material and peel easily away.

Außerdem ist es wichtig, das passende Schnittteil drangesteckt zu lassen. Man verliert sonst leicht den Überblick.

It is important to pin the pattern pieces at the fabric cut outs. You easily lose the owerview of the pieces.

Hilfreich finde ich übrigens, sich die passende Garnfarbe zu notieren. Dann weiß man sie bei weiteren Projekten oder Reparaturen sofort.

I like to note down the used yarn colour. So I know the colour at future projects or repairs imediately.

Zum Zusammennähen benutze ich den Patchworkfuß, der genau der Saumzugabe der Schnittteile entspricht (1/4 inch). Es gibt ihn auch mit Führung, dann geht das Abstandhalten sehr einfach. Zum knappkantigen Absteppen eignet er sich auch sehr gut, einfach entlang der Innenseite führen (dann stört die Führung vielleicht etwas). Für Zickzacknähte muss man den Fuß dann aber wechseln (außer 1/1)!

I use my patchwork (1/4 inch) foot for stitching. It corresponds with the seam allowance of most patterns. There are feet with guide which allow neat stitching. The foot is very good for topstitching, too. Just guide it along the inner edge.For zig zag seams you have to change feet (only 1/1 is possible)! 

Lladybird hat vor kurzem einige weitere Tips zum Dessous-Nähen aufgezeigt. Sie nutzt den Vernähstich (Bernina Stich Nr. 5) zum Steppen und programmiert den Geradstich mit verstellter Nadel zum Absteppen mit dem Absteppfuß (Bernina-Fuß #10). So muss sie nicht ständig die Nadelposition verstellen. Diesen Fuß nutzt Julia, um die Laminatteile sauber zusammenzunähen.

Lladybird recently showed some tips how to sew lingerie. She sews the seams with the "securing stitch" and uses the straight stitch with shifted needle for topstitching with the stitch in the ditch foot. Thisway, she doesn't have to change the needle position. Julia uses this foot to construct the laminated pieces neatly.

Mir vernäht der Vernähstich zu viel ( 4 Stiche vor, 4 zurück, 4 vor). Ich beginne jede Naht ca. 1 cm auf dem Stoff und nähe einige Stiche zurück, dann nähe ich meine Naht. Währenddessen halte ich die Anfangsfäden fest. Andernfalls rutscht der feine Stoff leicht in die Stichplatte.

I don't use the securing stitch, it sews too much ( 4 stitches forward, 4 return, 4 forward). I would begin each seam 1 cm (3/8") off the edge of the fabric, would sew some backstitches and then sew my seam all while holding the threads. This way, the delicate fabric would not be so easily eaten by the stitch plate.

I always stretch the elastics a little bit, but not the fabric.

Bei Gummibandrunden der Slips (Taille, Beinausschnitt) nähe ich Gummianfang und -ende flach übereinander, in dem ich die Endschnitte zur Stoffkante hin ausrichte. So habe ich keine knubbeligen Stellen. Das habe ich bei der wunderbaren Nählehrerin meines örtlichen Nähmaschinengeschäftes so gelernt.

When there are rounds of elastic at the panties (waist, leg opening), I sew the ends of the elastics flat one over the other. I adjust the cut edges with the edge of the fabric. This way, there won't be any knobs. I learned this method by my wonderful sewing teacher at my local sewing shop.

Bei den ersten BHs haben sich die knappkantig abgesteppten Nähte etwas zusammengezogen, was beim angezogenen BH sichtbar ist. Deshalb hatte ich die Nähte bei den nächsten beiden BHs nicht mehr zusätzlich abgesteppt. Diesmal habe ich die Oberfadenspannung etwas gelockert und wieder knappkantig abgesteppt. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass es jetzt besser ist.

The topstitched seams of my first bras are a little constricted which is visible when worn. Therefore, I did not topstitch my last two bras. This time, I loosened the tension of my thread just a little to sew and topstitch and I think it is alright now. 

Das sind meine Einstellungen:

- Steppstich: Patchworkfuß, Nadelposition 0, Länge 2,5 bis 3, Füßchenbreite (1/4")

- Absteppen: wie Steppstich, an innerer Nähfußkante orientiert oder 10-er-Fuß, Nadelposition verstellt (noch genauer)

- Zickzack zum Gummiannähen: normaler Nähfuß, B/L 2/2, Nadelposition sodass Stich neben Paspel trifft, bei zweiter Naht ein Stich in Stoff, einer ins Gummi.
- Dreifachzickzack: Bernina Stich 16, wie eingestellt.

- Riegel: Normaler Nähfuß, Zickzack B/L 2/0,6

Voilà my stitches:

- Straight stitch: Patchwork foot 1/4", needle position 0, length 2,5-3.

- Topstitch: see straight stitch, guided at the inner footsite or 
                           foot Nr. 10, needle position at desired position.

- Zigzag to sew on elastics: normal foot, w/l 2/2, needle position so that first seam stitch will be aside of the picot edge, second seam one stitch in fabric, one in elastic.

- Sewn zigzag: Bernina stitch #16.

- Bartack: zigzag W/L 2/0,6.

Maritime Knit Top, Liesl and Co.

Dear sewists,

Today a lot of German sewing fellows are meeting at MeMadeMittwoch.

This wonderful knit fabric waited to be sewn since I bought it at a fabric outlet one month ago. I think it has got quite an amount of linnen.

At first, I was not sure about the pattern. Because of the hymns other sewists are singing about Liesls patterns, I decided to treat me with this pattern which includes short seeves or 3/4 sleeves

I do not like to cut, assemble and tape PDF patterns, but this pattern is made so beautifully. There is a grid of 1'' all over the sheets. All the necessary cutting lines are indicated so you don't have to think where to cut best. Some sheets are cut twice, so you can assemble the pieces to different other sheets. The indication lets you tape together intuitively. This is the best PDF pattern I have ever seen!

Obviously, I made the 3/4 sleeves. At the size chart I realized that the measurements are not corresponding with that of a pear shaped woman like me. I decided to grade my bust size 4 to a 10 at the hips.

The instructions given are rather for sewing by machine than by serger. Mainly, I followed the instructions. Only at the little side vents at the bottom I changed the approach a little bit:

I sewed like indicated until several cm above the slit, clipped the SA at the corner horizontally until the seam and proceeded like indicated. Then I sew the side seams and arm seams by serger. I then pressed the SA backwards and with the sergerthreads finished the upper edges of the vent SA by hand.

The sleeves I had upgraded, too, but after fitting, I recut them at the original seamline of size 4.

The top is nicely loose like I had wanted it. BUT now, collecting the facts, I see that I have made a big mistake. I had read the general instructions of the pattern which indicate a seam allowance of 1/4''. I followed this instruction and marvelled why Liesl would have chosen such a little seam allowance which is not easy to handle at the sewing machine neither at the serger (cannot cut fabric while sewing). BUT at the pattern size key is written: all SA are 1/2'' and I think this is right. 

I like this neat shirt a lot. Maybe I will shorten it later on, because it ends at my wide hips. Maybe it will ride a little up when wearing it. I will see.
